This week Signals Research Group will present the results of their femtocell business case study at Mobile World Congress. For anyone who is at the event this week, this session is a must-see. We were fortunate to get an inside view on this exercise through our participation in Femto Forum Working Group 1 (WG1). Not only does it show a compelling case for femtocells under many scenarios, but it also provides a much more nuanced understanding into how femtocells will can be used strategically to deliver mobile services. For example, consider the case of providing “deep coverage” for data services—an operator wanting to reliably provide 2.5 Mbps download speed—equivalent to a low-tier wireline service—to users indoors or out. It turns out that femtocells can support such a service at one third the cost of macro networks. For a mid-tier service of 5 Mbps, femtocells are one fifth the cost of macro. This is just one example and there are many more that will be described in Barcelona, and posted to the Femto Forum web site.
